Saturday Drop-Ins

2:00pm -4:30pm

$25/attendee

Saturday drop-in classes are my weekly, come as you are, all ages, workshops. Each week has a themed project that we start with before moving towards open studio time. Kids ages 6-15 are the target audience. 

That's a wide range! Younger students will be encouraged to focus on exploring the materials of the day while older students will be prompted to seek new layers of depth and complexity in their process.

Pre-Registration is encouraged but not required.

Upcoming Saturday Themes:

​

April 4th : Gelli Print Eggs 

Using gelli plates we'll explore monoprinting with a variety of resist stencils to create color papers to collage into that good old symbol of spring, an egg. 

​

April 11th: Spring Branches

Collage a branch from a fruit tree in honor of Cherry Blossom festivals around the world. 

​

April 18th: Creature Feature

We'll make a variety of small creatures, from our familiar neighborhood animals and pets to fantastical dragons and unicorns. ​

​

April 25th: Blooms

This week we'll make wreaths and flower crowns for spring, to keep or give away for May Day. 

​

May 2nd: No Class â€‹â€‹â€‹

​

 

May 9th: Lego Prints

Using smooth topped bricks, we'll use this additive print medium to create layered prints. â€‹

​​

May 16th: Paper Bag Puppets

Come make a small creature in the form of a classic paper bag hand-puppet. We'll explore cut paper and how to communicate expressions and characters. 

​​

May 23rd: ​Watercolor

We'll explore techniques to add interest to our watercolor paintings.  

​

May 30th: Tea Painting

Who says you have to stick to the most traditional art materials? We'll explore tea and coffee as ink and paint. 

Youth Lessons

Aimed at developing creativity and confidence, weekly afterschool classes will explore both traditional and playful drawing, painting and sculptural techniques. 

 

Each week we will start with a warm up sketch as everyone settles in. Then we will work on a larger project until it is time to run around outside and eat snack. After snack students will have the option to work on their own independent works or continue on the structured project.

Monday April 6 

Intro to Mending as Function and Art 

​Learn to repair garments and objects using yarn and thread.  

​

Monday April 20

Intro to Weaving Techniques

​Come make a small mug rug! We'll explore color and texture and you'll leave knowing the difference between twill and tabby weaves. 

​

Monday April 27

Drawing as Communication 

Drawing is much like handwriting, the things some folks put to paper is fancier than others, but at the end of the day if you can be understood, you have succeeded. We'll explore different ways to get our points across, and put them into practice.

Monday May 4th

Art of Stars

May the fourth be with you! We'll look at art styles across the galaxies and play with marker and paint techniques.

Monday May 11 

Acrylic Painting (Plein Air TBA)

​Come explore some acrylic techniques for composition, speed and scale. If the weather is nice, we'll walk our supplies to the backyard or local park to practice working with wind and changing light. Beginners welcome. â€‹

Monday May 18

Drawing from Life - Deconstructing Forms

Drawing from life can feel daunting, but it doesn't have to stay that way.  We'll break down how to turn objects and beings into shapes and lines.

Woodshop Tool Trainings 

I share tool trainings with the fabulous Christian Summer Roidt (our Woodshop lead) and Ethan Miller. My next training is May 9th. 

 

Summer Camp at Davis Studio:

Under the Sea

June 22-June 26 

Create three-dimensional hanging art to create an undersea wonderland. Imagine you are a scuba diver encountering coral, octopuses, seahorses, and tropical fish of every variety, and paint what you see. Learn about and draw fascinating sea creatures, including jellyfish, sharks, and whales. Discover the magic of bioluminescence and incorporate some glowing paint into your artwork.

Board Games

August 17-21

Choose from a variety of materials to make your own board game. Design the board, card deck, pieces, accessories, and a game box. Use strategy and chance to create a game that you will love to play again and again. The week will conclude with time to play the games everyone in this camp has created.

Summer Camp at Camp Beech Cliff

June 29 - July 3: Fiber Arts: Sewing, Weaving, Yarn and Handwork - Come tangle with fibers of all stripes! Learn the basics of sewing, weaving, felting and more. Add color to your artwork by making your own natural dyes. Campers will be introduced to a variety of techniques and will be encouraged to stitch them together into their own fantastical creations to take home.

July 6 - 10: Mixed Media: Dragons - Do you dream of fantastic, scaly beasts of myth and legend?  Do you long to soar through the skies as an ancient rider of majestic creatures? This week we will paint, draw, and sculpt around a central theme: Dragons! We will explore the many forms these fantastical creatures take).

​

July 13 - 17 –Plein Aire Painting (Grades 6-10) -Join us as we follow in the steps of Monet and Van Gogh and take our canvases into the great outdoors to practice observation and capturing changing light in this historied artform. We will make our artwork at local landmarks and hidden gems to see why MDI is such a special place to paint. Please Note: Campers will need to wear durable shoes and clothes that can get paint on them.

July 20 - 24 – Fashion and Cosplay - Come explore the intersection of art, fashion, and sculpture. Campers will make their own mannequin and a fantastic ensemble of their own. Whether you long the be the next big designer, or the greatest cosplayer ever, grab some scissors, cardboard, fabric, thread, or duct tape, and create. 

​

July 27 - 31 – Messy Art!!! - Let’s get messy and create! This week we will find unconventional ways to paint, draw, sculpt and play…as long as it MAKES A MESS!!!! Please note: Campers will need to wear clothes they can get super dirty.

​
